Before you buy

  • The easiest place to start after Entry Grade. Most HG kits go together in an evening.
  • The widest range of mobile suits of any grade, which makes it the grade for building a shelf army.
  • No glue or paint needed. Side cutters give you much cleaner parts than twisting them off.
  • The letters after HG tell you the series: UC, CE, AC, FC, GQ and so on. The questions below explain them.
  • Want more detail at the same size? Look at RG. Want it bigger? Look at MG.

Questions

What do HGUC, HGCE and the other letters mean?

They tell you which Gundam series the kit comes from. UC is Universal Century, CE is Cosmic Era (SEED), AC is After Colony (Wing), EW is Endless Waltz, FC is Future Century (G Gundam), GQ is GQuuuuuuX and BF is Build Fighters.

Which grade should I start with?

Entry Grade if you have never built a kit: it is designed to go together without tools. HG if you have side cutters and want more choice. RG and MG make more sense once you have a build or two behind you.

Do I need glue or paint?

No. Bandai Gunpla snap together and the colors are molded in. Panel lining and a top coat are optional extras, not requirements.

What tools do I need?

A good pair of side cutters is the one must-have. A hobby knife or sanding sticks help clean up the small marks left where parts were cut from the runner.
